  • Brianna R. (Iowa) - The Princess Diaries - By: Meg Cabot

Mia Thermopolis is pretty sure there's nothing worse than being a five-foot-nine, flat-chested freshman, who also happens to be flunking Algebra. But she gets the surprise of her life. First, her mom announces that she's dating Mia's Algebra teacher. Then her dad reveals that he is the crown prince of Genovia ( AKA meaning Mia is a princess ). She goes from unpopular concidered loser to every body's #1 on their A list. How can one 14 year old handle all the responsiblities of becoming a princess? and at least try to seem normal to her school population? Well, you have to read it to find out.

  • CVH (IA) - an abundance of katherines by john green

In the Lindsey Lee Wells chapter--not the Katherine chapters, Colin realizes, "...like say I tell someone about my feral hog hunt. Even if it's a dumb story, telling it changes other people just the slightest little bit, just as living the story changes me....And that infinitesimal change ripples outward, from one person's story to the larger story. I will get forgotten, but the stories will ripple through the future forever....And so we all matter--maybe less than a lot, but always more than none."

Colin, child prodigy, has just graduated from high school and is unhappily beginning a new phase of his life. His heart has just been broken from unexpectedly being dumped by his nineteenth Katherine "love-of-his-life."  What's he to do? His mind-boggling search for a mathematical formula to predict the length of a love relationship is driving him crazy. He feels like a nobody; child prodigy flunky -- not quite genius. Besides, he's grieving for Katherine XIX to re-enter his life.  Yet, it's summer and his life-long buddy, Hassan, convinces Colin a road trip is the perfect cure for what's ailing him! Soon, on their way to NOWHERE in PARTICULAR, the boys detour off the beaten path in search of an ancient gravesite in the famous, but not-so-famous, Gunshot, Tennessee! Here is where Colin's brilliant mathematical problem solving begins to reveal great answers to living a righteous, fulfilling life and understanding love.  A real mixture of culture and a genuine bonding between the old and the young is about to occur this summer in Gunshot. John Green speaks well to the reader that time is passing and there are blessed stories to be gathered from our elders. And by the way, this ole librarian here is a former Tennessean. This story, surely, takes me back home to my hillbilly, barefoot and fancy-free days in Tennessee! A must read; you'll be laughing your way soon to a feral hog hunt with Colin and Hassan. Ya'll hang in there with the math...it'll all make sense to you as Colin figures it out!
