(Listen!)
Carol (Iowa)--Devil in the White City --great piece about the making of America at the turn of the 19th century / see when many of our conveniences of today were started / learn about American architecture / and solve the crime of America's worst serial killer! The book takes you on a stroll through the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, all under those bright new electric lights and lets you view the Midwest for miles from the top of the newly invented 36-car Ferris Wheel. Loved this quote by author in the book's note regarding his research for the book: "I do not employ researchers, nor did I conduct any primary research using the Internet. I need physical contact with my sources....To me every trip to a library or archive is like a small detective story....On one visit...,I found the actual notes....I saw how deeply the pencil dug into the paper." I look forward to reading more books by EriK Larson.
Take a tour of this magnificent world's fair
Brenna(Iowa) -- The Devil in the White City By Erik Larson. This is a great book to learn about Chicago and how many things first came about. It keeps your attention while providing you with many facts about the Windy City. At first you might not like it, but stick with it because it gets a lot better as you read. You will learn about the awful ways Dr. H. H. Holmes killed many people, mostly women, and the World's Columbian Exposition, where many things, such as the ferris wheel, juicy fruit, and shredded wheat were first invented.
Tanner (Iowa) -- The Devil in The White City by Erik Larson. This book is the best book i have ever read in my life. In the beginning it is boring because of all the background but once you start to hear about the serial killer it gets very interesting. it is crazy how nobody expected this guy to be the killer because he is a smooth talker and i wonder how many women he kills before her gets caught.
